Although it is the biggest in Croatia, Istria is a small peninsula of only 3000 square kilometers.
That’s why, seven-day walk is maybe ideal way to familiarize yourself with this country, which attracts with diversity of landscapes and wealth of cultural and historical inheritance. We have prepared a trekking for you with visit to some of the most beautiful regions of central and north Istria.
That is a landscape consisting of small towns from a storybook situated on the tops of the hills surrounded by vineyards and fields, brooks in deep ravines and mysterious caves.
We are going to visit abandoned small towns and villages, old churches and castles that become overgrown with ivy…

7 days hiking tour

Day 1 Arrival and getting settled in a 3-star hotel either in Pula or Medulin. Dinner.

Day 2 Riding in a van to Buzet, a small town situated on the hill, lasting for about an hour. From the center of the town where we’ll visit the old town, we are going through the canyon of the Mirna river toward the mill village Kotla abandoned long time ago. There is the only water mill on the Mirna river, as well as a picturesque tavern where we can refresh ourselves. We keep going through untouched nature up to another one abandoned village as well as to Hum, “the smallest town in the world”. After the lunch in a tavern, where we’ll taste medicinal brandy called biska made according to a several centuries old recipe as well as some of Istrian traditional dishes, we are going to view frescos in the local church and “Aleja Glagoljasa” – the monument of the oldest Slav writing – Glagolitic. In the afternoon we are going back to the place of accommodation by the van.

Day 3 After the breakfast we are going to the small town named Kanfanar by the van. From Kanfanar we are going down to the biggest Istrian valley called Draga. Draga starts in the abyss of Pazin, which has been described by Jules Verne in his work “Mathias Sandorf”, and finishes in Limski Kanal, the only Istrian fjord 11 kilometers pulled in land. On the way we are going to visit water springs in the vicinity of the remainders of the historical town Kastelir. From that place there is a nice view of the medieval town Dvigrad abandoned in the 13th century after the plague epidemic. It has never been renovated. We are going to visit it as well. On our way to the sea (Lim fjord) we shall also visit well-known Romualdo Cave having several legends connected to itself. We are going to visit it carrying the acetylene lamps. Lunch with specialties made of sea fruits in a restaurant on the coast and coming back to the place of accommodation follow next.

Day 4 In the morning we are going to Oprtalj, a typical Istrian small town on the hill surrounded with the vineyards. Our today’s path passes through the picturesque areas that have been attracting numerous lovers of nature and traditional worth during for the last few years. In addition to everything else we are going to visit Grožnjan, the medieval town completely abandoned about twenty years ago, which has been revived lately as the town of artists and numerous galleries. There are several belvederes on that path from which you can see the river Mirna valley and picturesque small towns Motovun, Zavrsje and Sv. Juraj – a village recently renovated in its original style. After the Istrian lunch in a rural household we are going back to the place of accommodation.

Day 5 The day is reserved for relaxation and can be used according to everybody’s own wish. We can suggest you one-day excursions, such as visit to national parks Plitvice and Brijuni, as well as excursion to Venice by a hydrofoil boat.

Day 6 We are coming back to the north areas where we are going to go up to 500 meters above sea level from Buzet toward the Cicarija mountain. We are going to visit the picturesque waterfall Sopot as well as the extreme sport center – Raspadalica from which there is a beautiful view of the whole Istria. After refreshing we shall visit the mountain village Slum where the interesting frescos made by unknown author have been recently discovered. The path finishes in Roc where there is a Gothic church painted in two layers and a tavern where we are going to dine Istrian specialties.

Day 7 The last day is reserved for the eastern coast of Istria. After climbing to a small hill named Skitaca and visiting a small village having the same name, we are going to go down toward the sea and on that way to visit the old town Labin with a beautiful view of the Adriatic islands and coast. During the walk we shall organize a picnic in the countryside. The path is full of brooks and waterfalls and it ends in one bigger tourist destination on this side of Istria – Rabac, where we can swim in case of high temperatures. The end of the day is reserved for farewell dinner in domestic surrounding with presentation of the traditional way of preparation of Istrian dishes in a pan inserted in embers of the hearth (Ceripnja), as well as for entertainment with accordion players.

Day 8 Leaving after breakfast.

In case of bad weather or unpredictable circumstances, changes in the schedule are possible.


What should you take with you?

  • strong comfortable shoes for trekking
  • waterproof overalls – raincoat
  • warm clothing in case of becoming colder
  • rucksack of at least 20 liters
  • sun protection (hat, sunglasses, protective cream)
  • bathing suit or trunks and towel
  • daily water supply
  • walking stick
  • camera

  • It is recommendable that the participants take out personal insurance.
